The Port of New York and New Jersey is the busiest container gateway on the East Coast and the second-largest container gateway in the United States. The port handled nearly 8.9 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2025, with Port Newark and the adjacent Elizabeth marine terminals forming its largest concentration of container activity. This enormous volume creates a constant flow of international 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft high cube containers through marine terminals, depots, trucking yards, warehouses, and distribution centers throughout northern New Jersey. Newark has some of the lowest shipping container prices in the country, but unfortunately some of the highest shipping rates as well, so your delivered price on a shipping container might be higher than expected if you can’t manage your own pick-up.

Newark also has an unusually strong ship-to-rail network. ExpressRail terminals at Port Newark and Elizabeth connect directly through Conrail to CSX and Norfolk Southern, allowing containers to transfer from vessels to trains for movement throughout the eastern and central United States. The overall ExpressRail system has capacity for roughly 1.5 million container lifts annually, while Port Newark Container Terminal alone handles more than 1.7 million TEUs. The combination of extremely high marine container volume, extensive on-dock rail infrastructure, and one of the country’s largest concentrations of container depots makes Newark a major market for shipping container movement and used container availability.
