Baltimore is the 13th largest container port in the U.S. by volume. With containers coming directly into the Port of Baltimore and the Seagirt Marine Terminal, shipping containers imported via Baltimore can immediately transfer from cargo ship to rail. Seagirt has two 50-foot deep berths, capable of handling large container vessels and an adjacent 68-acre Intermodal Container Transfer Facility operated by CSX next to the terminal. Baltimore handled a record 1.11 million TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) in 2025, giving the region a substantial and steady supply of 20ft, 40ft, and 40ft high-cube containers.

The completion of the Howard Street Tunnel project in 2026 removed a historic rail bottleneck and enabled full double-stack container trains to move through Baltimore. Double-stack operations substantially increase the number of containers that can move by rail, and the project is expected to eventually increase the Port’s container business by over 10%, or about 160,000 containers annually. While Baltimore will likely never grow to become the largest container port in the U.S. again, like it was in the 1800’s, it’s still a major intermodal hub and has a steady supply of inbound used shipping containers in wind and watertight and One Trip conditions.
