What matters is whether corrosion has progressed far enough to compromise the roof, walls, doors, frame or structural members beneath the floor. Water is one of the biggest threats to container life
Water becomes a problem when it is allowed to remain against steel for long periods. A roof dent that collects standing water can eventually develop significant corrosion. Likewise, placing a container where its underside remains in standing water can accelerate corrosion of the steel cross-members supporting the floor. Good placement therefore contributes directly to longevity. The container should sit on a stable, reasonably level location with drainage that prevents water from accumulating beneath it. The roof should also be periodically checked for areas where water is consistently pooling.
Simple maintenance can extend useful life
Shipping containers do not require complicated maintenance, but they should not be completely ignored. Periodically inspect the roof, doors, exterior steel and underside for developing corrosion or damage. Address areas where water collects, keep drainage around the container functioning, and repair damaged coatings before corrosion becomes more serious. Cleaning and repainting the exterior with an appropriate coating can also help protect exposed steel. The goal is not to keep a used container looking new. It is to prevent small, manageable issues from developing into structural problems.
Condition matters—but age alone does not tell the whole story
One Trip, Cargo Worthy and Wind & Water Tight containers represent different points in a container's working life, but those classifications should not be interpreted simply as expiration dates. One Trip containers are newer and generally have much less cosmetic wear. Cargo Worthy and Wind & Water Tight containers have spent considerably more time in freight service and normally show surface rust, dents and other evidence of use. Climate and placement affect lifespan
