Can I Bury a Shipping Container Underground?

No. We don’t recommend burying a shipping container. Burying a container is a bad idea for a lot of reasons.

Key points

  • Container roofs aren’t meant to support weight, and they’ll sag if you put dirt on top of them.
  • The moisture in the dirt will eventually cause the container to rust through.
  • Don’t waste your time burying a container—it’s not worth it.

Why underground containers fail

First, the roof panels of a shipping container aren’t designed to hold much weight because containers stack on their corners. When even a few inches of dirt are piled onto a shipping container roof it starts to sag. Moisture in the dirt will also cause the container to rust anywhere it’s touching dirt and eventually fail (it could take years, but it will eventually happen). If you bury a container you’ll need to put cement around the container and reinforce the roof. At that point it’s probably cheaper to do it without the container at all.

It’s never worth it to bury a shipping container. Sometimes we’ll see AI videos online of people doing it and it’s incredibly misleading.
